Bedians edged out in Mushy Cup curtain-raiser

Burnley United reclaimed the McKeown Cup for the LAL with a 3-1 win over Bedians in a close game played in hot and dry conditions in East Lancashire.

In a first half of few clear chances, Burnley had the better of the early exchanges with visitors going closest with a shot that flashed across goal but past the far post.

The home side went ahead when a loose ball in the six-yard box was clipped home, and the lead was doubled on the half-hour when a quick counter attack ended with a crisp finish.

There was a let off for Burnley when their keeper misjudged a bouncing ball but a defender covered well to clear with Keane Swindells looking to pounce.

Bedians took the game to Burnley in the second half, probing the home defence and got their reward when Swindells scored.

Some fine chances to level matters were spurned, and it was to prove costly as the home side netted their third to re-establish their two goal lead with less than fifteen minutes left.

Bedians pressed hard to the end in energy sapping conditions and were a credit to the L&C.

On another day, it could easily have gone their way in the annual season curtain raiser.
