Signol Athletic clinch Whitehead Cup

Updated: Apr 26

Congratulations to Signol Athletic who edged past Newton Vikings 2-1 at West Didsbury and Chorlton in the Whitehead Cup Final.

West Didsbury and Chorlton FC were again excellent hosts as they provided a superb pitch, great hospitality and a their usual warm and friendly welcome for the L&C’s first cup final of the season

It was the Whitehead Cup Final for teams in Divisions A and B.

The match was between two teams in Division A- unbeaten league leaders Signol Athletic and Newton Vikings who are in midtable.

The game was controlled in immaculate style by referee Bradley Williams and his team of Roger Clegg, James Flower and Liam Ryan.

The game also supported the local charity of Francis House and raised £192 on the night by L&C EDI official Ann Evans and her volunteers.

The first half saw defences in charge at both ends and few chances created with Vikings enjoying greater possession.

The deadlock was broken soon after the break by Ben Perry of Signol Athletic. Dan Roper added a second after 80 minutes with a stunning strike to put Signol in control but Vikings kept up their efforts and put the game on edge with Luke Hassall reducing the arrears in injury time but it just ended as a deserved consolation as Signol’s young team survived a nervy finish to win the pristine trophy.

L&C President Rob O’Connor gave thanks to all who had made this a special night for L&C football and presented the new style medals to the match officials and runners up before presenting the Whitehead Cup to a delighted Signol team who were able to celebrate in style and can aim for a league and cup double.
