As we enter 2026, the L&C’s oldest member club South Manchester are looking to complete their ninety-eighth season, only one short of Aldermere’s record of ninety-nine, and are also now fast approaching one thousand league fixtures played.
Formed in 1914, South didn’t actually start playing until in 1921 due to the Great War and joined the L&C a year later and played on a number of grounds around Withington before becoming a fixture at Christie Playing Fields in 1934 until they were redeveloped in 1987.
South eventually found a long-term home again at Chorlton Sports and Social Club in 2007.
Though the League championship has evaded them, finishing runners-up on four occasions, a fourth-place finish was achieved as recently as 2015, winning all the L&C’s cup competitions over the years.

South were also a leading club at county level, in the Lancashire Amateur Cup and later the Manchester Amateur Cup, which they won in 1989.
The club have endured a lean few years since they last graced the Premier Division, the Covid epidemic affected the Club badly who were forced to regroup in Division Two and losing their reserve team.
South were elevated back to Division Two in the close season and are now in the process of rebuilding the club and are looking to recruit volunteers and new players to their ranks.
Club Secretary Tony Brogan has put out the call for anyone with a connection with South to come forward and help in any way that they can, but the Club also needs new blood in their playing ranks.
With their one hundredth season in sight, South Manchester would like to reach it on a high.
