Vics Strike Late to Complete Double

Salford Vics completed the double after a dramatic 3-2 in over a valiant Abacus Media in the Rhodes Cup Final.

Wythenshawe FC were great hosts on and off the pitch for the game in which Vics, who retained the Premier Division title, were hoping to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet but faced tough opposition against an Abacus outfit destined to finish third in the top flight in a season where no other side has won more, other than the champions.

They outlined their intent to oust their lofty opponents with a dream start that saw strikes from James LITTEN and Jack AUBREY put Abacus two goals to the good with half an hour played.

However, Joe AXON halved the deficit just before the break with the first of his brace and showed more clinical finishing to drag his side level on the hour.

Vics took control of the game but were thwarted by a virtuoso performance from Abacus’ young goalkeeper Josh BARNET who put in a man of the match display, producing a string of fine saves for a team that defended with admirable grit and determination.

But their hearts were broken in the final minutes as Josh LAWMAN struck late on to complete the turnaround and Vics held off a late rally to secure a dramatic double.

Both sides were a credit to each other and the league, and the occasion was even more special as it helped to support St Ann’s Hospice, which provides a vital service to families in the area.
