Boothstown, Grappenhall and Signol Pull Off Cup Shocks

Boothstown and Grappenhall pulled off seismic shocks in the Geoff Garnett Cup this weekend. Division One Grappenhall SC gained revenge on the Premier Division outfit Manchester Rose who came out on top in their Rhodes Cup fixture earlier this season.

This time though, Grappenhall powered to victory, securing a convincing 4-1 win.

In the other game, Boothstown’s performance belied their lowly Premier Division position as they produced a heroic performance to keep league leaders Bollington United at bay. Bollington, who have lost just once in the league this season, were held to a goalless draw and Boothstown came out on top of the penalty shootout 4-2.

Elsewhere, an all Premier Division tie between Rushford Park and Bedians was closely contested but Rushford went through, scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.

The other tie between Division Two Old Alts Reserves and Division One Stretford Paddock Ams had the potential for upset, but Paddock ruthlessly stopped this from happening with a comfortable 4-1 win.

A catch-up game in the Wray Cup was a close derby contest that saw Saddleworth 3D won by the odd goal in three at Moston Brook Thirds.

Signol Athletic caused a shock in the Keith Marsden Cup, as the Division A outfit thrashed Division Three Fitton Hill All-Stars 5-0.

There were no Premier Division games this week and in the only Division One contest, two promotion hunters in Mellor and AFC Stockport shared four goals in a thrilling encounter.

It’s close at the top of Division Two with just three points between the top three.

Moorside lead the way after a 5-2 win at South Manchester. South led 2-1 at the break but were reduced to ten men which allowed Moorside to come back with goals from Jason Evans (two), Jack Smith, Declan Wallbank and Stephen Hoult and they could even afford a late penalty miss.

Moston Brook sit two points behind Moorside after an incredible 9-5 win at Abacus Media Reserves and Manchester Rovers were without a game so stay in third place.

Heywood St James Reserves are on the heels of the top three with a game in hand after a gritty 1-0 win over Old StretsGregs.

The other game in the division was a mid-table affair with Konger winning 2-0 at Elton Fold.

Waterhead stay on top of Division Three after an entertaining 4-3 win over Altrincham Hale Thirds.

It keeps them a point clear of Didsbury Reserves who worked hard for a 3-2 win over Timperley Villa and they have a game in hand over Waterhead.

The other game in the division was a local derby at Spurley Hey who lost out 2-0 to Stoconians.

The top three teams in Division A were all out of league action but Village Manchester Reserves were delighted to record their first win of the season to move off bottom place in style with a resounding 6-1 win over Heyside.

It was a much closer affair as Newton Vikings scored the only goal in their game against Rushford Park Reserves.

Just three games in Division B but leaders Oldham Hulmeians Reserves were held to a 2-2 draw by a lively Richmond Rovers Reserves side.

In a local derby Waterhead Reserves had few problems in a comfortable 5-1 win over Saddleworth 3D Reserves.

In the other game, Bury Ams B were too hot to handle as they cruised to a 7-2 win at Moston Brook Fourths.
